Aquarium at Atlantis Nassau: A History 

If you were to visit Paradise Island before 1960, you would’ve found a tranquil tropical island. Since the second half of the 20th century, however, the 685-acre island has become the land of mega-resorts, one of which is the Atlantis Bahamas Resort. 

The Aquarium Atlantis has gone through several renovations and expansions, one of which included the Atlantis Dig. Today, guests can observe 50,000 animals housed in eight million gallons of water spread across 14 lagoons. Other Atlantis attractions like Aquaventure Water Park are similarly impressive and have origins that stretch back decades. 

Today, the Atlantis Aquarium is a sight to behold.

Atlantis Dig: What to See

The Atlantis Aquarium does an excellent job of differentiating itself from other aquariums. Most of its tanks and exhibits have themes that make them enjoyable for guests of all ages.

The Atlantis Dig is styled after the lost city of Atlantis. With ruins and artifacts from the mythical city alongside impressive marine exhibits, there’s a lot of exploring you can do. 

The Animals

In terms of animals, it’s hard to leave the Atlantis Aquarium feeling disappointed, particularly after visiting the Atlantis Dig.

As you make your way through the dark and moody exhibits, you’ll see tropical fish brightening your surroundings everywhere you look. Some of the special tanks hold animals like giant groupers, sharks, piranhas, and the venomous Indo-Pacific ocean lionfish. Besides fish, guests can also see bright and colorful jellyfish that seem to change color, human-sized moray eels, and rays gliding through the water.

Rays are some of the many animals that call the Atlantis Aquarium home.

Part of the Dig Aquarium at Atlantis Nassau also includes an interactive exhibit. Here, guests can interact with different forms of marine life, including starfish, conch, crabs, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and more. This attraction is particularly great for young visitors – besides being entertaining, it can also teach children about the importance of protecting the oceans. 

The Aesthetic 

As mentioned, part of the appeal of the Dig Aquarium Atlantis is the aesthetic. As opposed to just having standard tanks with animals residing inside of them, all of the exhibits feature elements that make you feel like you’ve stepped into the lost city of Atlantis.

When you walk through the halls of the aquarium, you’ll come across everything from obelisks and artifacts to Atlantean hieroglyphics. The exhibits themselves also feature these elements, so instead of just enjoying them on the tank exteriors, you’ll see fish and other marine life swimming around and interacting with them on the exhibit interiors. 

The Aquarium Atlantis exhibits also contain unique relics and artifacts.

Visiting the Dig Aquarium Atlantis is, therefore, a great way to learn about the mythical city, in addition to the bountiful marine life residing within the tanks!

Getting Around

The Dig is a series of tunnels that snake their way underground through different exhibits. There are some vantage points that allow you to gaze into the water from above, but much of the fun comes from walking through the tunnels and appreciating the marine life all around you.

The Dig is full of windows and vantage points that let you see into exhibits.

From the Dig Atlantis Aquarium, you’ll want to take the time to explore the other nearby aquariums. For example, Predator Lagoon is another nearby attraction worth visiting that features rope bridges over exhibits, tanks underneath them, and much more.

Getting in

If you choose to stay at the Atlantis Resort Bahamas, you’ll be able to visit the Dig Atlantis Aquarium without having to pay any additional fees. Guests staying at The Royal are particularly lucky since you can access the aquarium through the hotel lobby.

Alternatively, if you stay off-site or only plan on being in Nassau for a day, you can purchase a day pass to enjoy the aquarium and the other resort attractions.
