Upgrades to the Sea Turtle Hospital in 2024
Throughout 2024 the Loggerhead Marine life Center has been investing in a complete renovation of their Sea Turtle Hospital facilities. In 2024 they became the first sea turtle hospital in South Florida to acquire a CT scanner with state-of-the-art medical technology, enhancing its ability to care for these marine creatures.

With the addition of a cutting-edge computer tomography (CT) machine, a vital tool for diagnosing and treating sick and injured sea turtles. The new equipment was generously donated by the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation.
CT imaging is increasingly becoming a standard practice in sea turtle healthcare, providing highly detailed 3D scans that can detect lesions or tumors that might go unnoticed with traditional X-rays or ultrasounds. The hospital is already equipped with an advanced X-ray room, a blood analysis lab, an endoscope, and an ultrasound machine. Now, with the new CT scanner, Dr. Heather Barron, LMC’s Chief Science Officer, will have an even greater ability to diagnose, treat, and release sea turtles.

Boo is a Juvenile Green turtle with the evidence of a predator attack bite
Boo is a Juvenile Green turtle admitted to the Sea Turtles hospital at Loggerhead Marine Life Center in October 2024. They were found in Port St Lucie with the evidence of a predator attack bite to the shell. After continued treatment for wound care antibiotics and TBN, Boo was released in December 2024.
20 cold stunned Kemps Ridleys turtles continue to receive treatment at the Sea Turtle Hospital
Loggerhead Marine Life Center received 20 cold stunned Kemps Ridleys turtles from the New England Aquarium. A sharp decline in ocean temperatures across northern Florida has led to sea turtles experiencing cold stunning. This condition occurs when frigid waters cause the turtles to become lethargic, lose mobility, and struggle to feed or swim. To survive, they require urgent medical care, including antibiotics, fluids, and intravenous nutrition.
They were treated for frostbite, pneumonia, eye ulcers, and more. As of February 2025, they continue to receive treatment at the Sea Turtle Hospital.
