Nassau Bahamas Snorkeling: Where to Go
Clifton Heritage National Park
Oftentimes when you travel to another country, you have to go a bit out of your way to find sites that allow you to connect with nature. That’s not the case for Nassau; as mentioned, you can find opportunities for snorkeling all around the island of New Providence.
On the westernmost part of the island, you’ll find Clifton Heritage National Park. This is one of the best Nassau Bahamas snorkeling locations. In the waters off of the shore, you’ll find several coral reefs full of fish and other creatures. Perhaps most interesting, however, are the sculptures scattered around the seafloor. From the 18-foot-tall Ocean Atlas sculpture to the 8-foot-tall Virtuoso Man, the natural and artificial beauty of Clifton Heritage National Park is breathtaking, to say the least.

Natural and artificial beauty combine to make Clifton Heritage Park one of the best Nassau snorkeling spots.
After you’ve gotten your fill of snorkeling for that day, you can also enjoy some of the park’s other attractions. From the beautiful beach to the cotton plantation ruins, there’s as much to see above the surface of the water as there is beneath.
Given all that it has to offer, Clifton Heritage National Park is an accessible and amazing Nassau snorkeling spot.
Rose Island
Located just several miles east of New Providence and Paradise Island is Rose Island. While this uninhabited island may be small, it has a lot to offer. It also functions as another one of the best Nassau Bahamas snorkeling locations.

Rose Island offers some of the best New Providence and Paradise Island snorkeling.
Rose Island offers visitors the quintessential Bahamas experience – gorgeous white-sand beaches caressed by crystal-clear azure water. Along the shore, you can find beautiful reefs full of angel fish, clownfish, and other tropical varieties.
However, what sets Rose Island apart from some other New Providence and Paradise Island snorkeling opportunities are the sea turtles. These gorgeous creatures swim around the waters of the island, with some tours specializing in taking travelers to see them.

Rose Island is famous for its nearby sea turtles.
From sea turtles and tropical fish to pristine beaches and warm water, no Bahamas vacation is complete without a stop at Rose Island.
Staniel Cay Exuma Plane Wreck
On Nassau Bahamas excursions to Exuma, travelers get the chance to visit an underwater plane wreck in the waters near Staniel Cay. Like many of the other attractions in the Exumas, the Staniel Cay Exuma plane wreck has a unique history. You’ll want to understand it before visiting!

Nassau Bahamas excursions let you swim and snorkel around the Staniel Cay plane wreck.
Decades ago, when the Colombian drug cartel was at the height of its power, smugglers often flew through the airspace of the Bahamas. Unlike other countries in the region, the airspace was relatively unpatrolled, making drug smuggling easier. Unfortunately for one pair of smugglers, a plane, packed to the brim with marijuana, crashed down in the Exuma waters in the 1970s. It has sat there on the seafloor ever since.
While the vessel may be man-made, time has transformed it into something between the realms of artificial and natural. It’s now home to many different species of coral and fish. Those make it another one of the many interesting Nassau Bahamas snorkeling spots.
Although the Bahamas house several underwater plane wrecks, the Exuma plane wreck offers some of the best snorkeling in Nassau and the Bahamas since it’s in shallow water. The water around the plane is only around ten feet deep, making it easy to explore without diving gear.

The shallow water makes the Exuma plane wreck perfect for snorkeling.
The Exuma Musician
Another site you’ll want to make time to visit in the Exumas is the life-sized sculpture of a mermaid and piano. While you won’t quite find the levels of marine life present that you can find at other snorkeling Nassau Bahamas spots, the site is worth visiting nonetheless.
Located off the coast of Rudder Cut Cay, one of David Copperfield’s private islands in the region (he owns several), Copperfield had the stainless steel sculpture constructed by Jason DeCaires Taylor. He then had it submerged into the waters around his island.
Today, The Musician is a fun surprise to the lucky visitors who stay on or visit Copperfield’s private islands. It’s located around 12 to 15 feet beneath the surface of the water and can be a bit difficult to spot when the water is murky. However, when it is clear, it makes seeing the sculpture all the more worthwhile.

The Musician is a fantastic sculpture for photo ops.
If you get a chance to visit the site and can hold your breath for a while, try swimming down and posing on the piano bench next to the mermaid. Doing so provides you with an iconic shot. It also makes the Exuma underwater mermaid piano sculpture another one of the best Nassau Bahamas snorkeling sites.
Thunderball Grotto
Located around 80 miles south of the capital, Thunderball Grotto is another site that you’ll see on Nassau Bahamas excursions to Exuma. While you can’t go wrong with any of the snorkeling locations included on this list, there’s something about Thunderball Grotto that puts it above many of the others.
It could be the fact that this underwater cave system is home to all sorts of colorful creatures, including coral reefs and fish. However, its unique history is another reason why it’s one of the best Nassau Bahamas snorkeling opportunities.

Trips to Thunderball Grotto offer some of the best snorkeling in Nassau.
The site gets its name from the James Bond film Thunderball. When you explore the site, you’ll quickly realize how perfect a set it is for an international super spy film. Besides James Bond, however, numerous other films have also featured scenes in Thunderball Grotto. From Splash to Never Say Never, Hollywood is as big of a fan of the caves as marine biologists.
The abundant marine life combined with the site’s colorful Hollywood history makes Thunderball Grotto one of the best Nassau snorkeling sites. Those aspects also make it one you’ll want to visit while on your Bahamas vacation.
Snorkeling Nassau Bahamas: Opportunities Abound
Regardless of how long you plan on spending in the country’s capital, it’s not hard to find fantastic Nassau Bahamas snorkeling opportunities. The Bahamas has plenty of marine life to enjoy no matter where you end up going.
That said, out of all the Nassau Bahamas excursions, one you’ll want to ensure you sign up for is a Nassau to Staniel Cay day tour. Besides giving you the chance to explore underwater plane wrecks, caves, and other incredible locations, you also get to meet the world-famous Exuma Pigs.
